Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) is a leading not-for-profit private university that was officially launched on 13 August 2002 and is wholly owned by the UTAR Education Foundation. UTAR was set up with support of the government, industries, companies, hawkers, taxi drivers, philanthropists, retirees and the general public. With these support and donations, UTAR has been able to grow from its beginning and now operates in its Kampar and Sungai Long campuses. 

Since its inception, the University has grown and developed at a pace beyond expectation. With just an initial enrolment of 411 students in 2002, UTAR has now progressed to a current enrolment of over 21,000 students pursuing tertiary education in UTAR’s more than 131 programmes ranging from foundation to doctorate level. Among the university’s alumni of over 77,000 are successful entrepreneurs, directors of international corporations, professionals, key public figures and achievers who are now contributing to the society and the nation. 

UTAR’s affordable fees have provided educational opportunities to many students who have graduated and progressed to improving the livelihood of their families. This would not have been possible without the continued support of our generous donors, sponsors, alumni and supporting members of the community over the years. UTAR has consistently been providing quality and affordable education focusing on excellence in teaching and research and upholding the strong principles of good education to meet the human resource requirements of the country. 

The university is constantly on its toes seeking ways to progress, expand and strategise for the future. Hence, the next phase of UTAR’s development is the setting up of a teaching and community hospital in UTAR Kampar Campus, Perak, providing medical care and services in Western Medicine and Traditional and Complementary Medicine including Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Traditional Malay Medicine and also clinical training for its medical and health sciences students.

On 16 November 2009, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) established the M Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS) in UTAR Sungai Long Campus offering the MBBS and bachelor’s degree in Chinese Medicine, Nursing and Physiotherapy. The first batch of MBBS, physiotherapy and Nursing students graduated in 2015 and the first batch of Chinese Medicine students graduated in 2016. The faculty established its Master of Medical Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy (Medical Sciences) in 2011.

In order for UTAR to focus on best practices to train and graduate doctors of high calibre, having its own hospital fully managed by UTAR is a move in the right direction. Training students and staff on the latest procedures and technologies to provide the best patient and medical care and contributing to the overall health of the community would be UTAR’s priority.

The proposed setting up of the hospital is a timely and inevitable move as the university has been conducting medical degree programmes in the M Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS) since its establishment. The hospital will not only offer affordable and quality basic and specialist medical services to the students and the public, but also also provide clinical training for the MBBS, TCM and Health Science students in the Faculty.

The Hospital Site

UTAR Kampar Campus is the ideal location for the hospital with its beautiful landscape and spacious land. Kampar is near Ipoh, Gopeng, Tapah, Proton City, Tanjung Malim, Teluk Intan and Malim Nawar with various adjacent communities who will require the services of the hospital.

The Hospital Development 

The project comprises an initial phase of a hospital-complex with 250 beds for Western Medicine and 100 beds for TCM and a future phase of additional 250 beds. There will be hospital services in Western Medicine and Traditional and Complementary Medicine including Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine.

Project Cost 

The overall construction cost and cost of facilities and equipment is estimated to be RM330 million.

Donation 

UTAR was established as a not-for-profit University with donations from philanthropists, benefactors and the public. Hence, this hospital will also be run as a not-for-profit hospital and will be self-sustaining to provide affordable and quality medical services to the public.
